The Twollars idea was conceived by Internet entrepreneurs Eiso Kant and Mac Taylor. They noticed that there was an enormous amount of 'social energy' on Twitter that goes unmeasured. They realised that if this energy could be converted into a symbolic standard, it could then be passed around like a currency.
They came up with Twollars as that standard. Twollars passes all the tests. It is positive. It is social. It is a measure of energy that can be exchanged like money.
It's a way to convert your 'good deed', your knowledge, your energy, your generosity it into a new form of money. By converting your Tweet into Twollars you can now pass that value on to others. You can reward others for their Tweet. And they can do the same. And soon you have new way of valuing and rewarding all the people you like, admire, and appreciate.
Helping Charities
The founders recognized that charitable donations are shrinking dramatically, worldwide, along with the economy. Furthermore, in a time of economic crisis there's a growing respect for companies who take the initiative to help others, beyond the call for profits. It's these companies who create loyal consumers.
They saw that Twollars could be converted to dollars by sponsoring companies and businesses.
On the Twollars website, businesses or corporations pledge to support a charity. Twitter users then donate their Twollars to the charity's Twollar fund. When the fund reaches a certain amount say: 10,000, the sponsoring business exchanges the Twollars for dollars and donates 10,000 USD to the charity. The sponsoring businesses gain favourable publicity, recognition and social capital with their contribution.
Twollars create a virtuous circle benefiting everyone involved. Charities get the attention of Twitter users and businesses. They directly benefit from positive social activity. Twitter users get the satisfaction of knowing they are helping a good cause. They are part of a new way to convert their social energy into charitable giving. Just by doing what they enjoy, Twitter users directly help others in need.
About the Founders
Eiso Kant and Mac Taylor met on Twitter and immediately hit it off. Eiso's profile on Twitter reads: "Internet Entrepeneur who loves life!" Mac's is longer but includes: "Evolution of Twitter". Therein lies a key to their synergy. After an initial two hour long Skype call, ideas began buzzing and bouncing. "Eiso is on the cutting edge of the Internet", said Mac. "Since the age of 14 he has run his own successful online businesses, and I was very impressed by his entrepreneurial energy and positive attitude. He loves what he does and it shows."
